Travelling with a baby is mostly logistics. Pack for the journey separately from the trip, keep the journey bag within reach, and plan feeds and naps around departure times. Here is the list our store team uses.

The journey bag (within reach, always)

  • Diapers: the number you would use at home for the journey time, times 1.5.
  • Wipes, a folding changing mat, rash cream, zip bags for used nappies.
  • Two full changes of clothes for the baby and one top for you.
  • Two muslins: shade, burp cloth, blanket, nursing cover.
  • Feeds for the journey plus two extra, and a small insulated flask of warm water for formula.
  • Toddler snacks that do not melt or crumble, and a sipper.
  • Two small, quiet toys, one of them new.
  • Thermometer, the baby's regular medicines and the paediatrician's number.

By car

  • A rear-facing car seat, fitted tight, every trip, however short. Never in the front seat.
  • Window sunshades and a light cotton layer; the back seat heats up fast.
  • Stop every 90 minutes to two hours for a feed, a change and a stretch.
  • Leave early morning or after 4 pm in summer.

By train

  • Book a lower berth and carry your own sheet, a small pillow for you and a mosquito net or full-sleeve set for the evening.
  • Hand sanitiser for every surface before the baby touches it.
  • A carrier is easier than a pram on platforms and in the coach; fold the stroller for the destination.
  • Boiled water from home for formula; buy sealed bottled water only.

By flight

  • Feed (breast, bottle or sipper) during take-off and landing to ease ear pressure.
  • A cabin-size stroller that folds small is checked at the gate on most airlines; confirm the limits when booking.
  • A carrier for the queues and the walk to the gate.
  • Dress the baby in layers; cabins run cold.
  • Toddlers: a window seat, stickers, a small book and a tablet with downloaded shows for the last hour.

Sleep at the destination

A travel cot or a playpen gives a familiar sleep space. If you co-sleep, bring the baby's own sheet so it smells like home. Keep bedtime routines the same: bath, feed, song.

What parents buy before a trip: a car seat, a baby carrier, a compact stroller, a playpen or travel cot, feeding bottles and a steriliser bag, plus a few cotton sets in the next size. Read stroller vs pram if the stroller is still to be bought.

Questions parents ask us

How many diapers should I pack for a journey?
Count what the baby uses at home in that many hours and pack one and a half times that number in the journey bag, with the rest in the main luggage.
Can I take a stroller on a flight in India?
Most airlines let you use a stroller up to the gate and check it there, and small cabin-size strollers may go in the overhead bin. Check the airline's size and weight limits when you book.
Does a baby need a car seat for short trips?
Yes. A rear-facing car seat, fitted tight in the back seat, for every trip. Holding a baby on your lap does not protect them in a sudden stop.
